When Thomas Burberry invented gabardine in 1879, he did not simply create a waterproof fabric: he laid the foundations of a men's wardrobe that would span almost a century and a half without losing its relevance. Polar explorers, aviators, officers in trench coats: the British house dressed those who faced the elements, and this functional heritage remains Burberry's most precious creative resource today.
