About this selection

Rick Owens has developed a sartorial vocabulary for men that belongs to no pre-existing tradition of menswear, neither British tailoring, nor American sportswear, nor Japanese street fashion, although he maintains complex and nourishing relationships with each of these cultures. What the Californian designer has invented for men exists in an entirely new conceptual space, that of urban monasticism, borrowing simultaneously from the rigor of medieval religious orders, the aesthetic brutality of industrial environments, and a vision of contemporary masculinity that rejects conventional hierarchies between formal and casual, between luxury and raw, between protection and vulnerability.

The manipulation of proportions is Rick Owens' central creative tool in his approach to menswear. Elongated T-shirts that fall well below the belt and redefine the relationship between torso and legs, drop-crotch trousers that fundamentally alter how the male body occupies and moves through space, and exaggerated volumes that transform each silhouette into wearable architecture constitute a coherent system for subverting the norms of the dressed male body, a permanent invitation to reconsider what clothing can and should do for the wearer.
