Chitose Abe founded Sacai in 1999 after years spent in Junya Watanabe's workshops, bringing with her a technical mastery of garment construction and a creative freedom that her formative years helped refine without ever confining her to a particular school or orthodoxy. The singularity of her approach lies in an intuition that is as simple as it is difficult to execute with the consistency and regularity that Sacai has maintained for a quarter of a century: that the archetypes of the female wardrobe, precisely because they are immediately recognizable and laden with cultural and emotional meaning, constitute the richest and most productive working material available to a designer seeking to produce something truly new rather than merely different.
