Issey Miyake dedicated most of his career to a question few designers have had the honesty and courage to ask themselves so directly: why should clothing constrain the body rather than liberate it? This fundamental question, nurtured by Western training and a sensibility deeply rooted in the Japanese culture of gesture and movement, has produced over the decades textile innovations and approaches to garment construction that have lastingly expanded the possibilities of global fashion. Pleats Please, launched in 1993, is the most accessible and universally desirable culmination of this research, a synthesis of the technical radicality and everyday practicality that Miyake had sought since his beginnings.

The manufacturing process that gives Pleats Please its unique character is a complete inversion of conventional garment logic. Each piece is cut and sewn from high-quality polyester fabric to three times its final size, before being sandwiched between two sheets of paper and passed through a pleating machine that compresses and definitively structures the fabric into permanent pleats whose memory resists washing, creasing, and time. The result is a fabric that simultaneously possesses the lightness and transparency of a veil, the elasticity of a jersey, and the structure of an architectural fabric, allowing for fluid silhouettes and saturated colors of an intensity that no other textile technique produces in the same way.
