Founded in 1919 by fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga and established in Paris since 1937, the house of Balenciaga has become an absolute reference thanks to its visionary style and revolutionary designs.
In 1997, Nicolas Ghesquière was appointed artistic director of the house. He was inspired by Cristobal's legacy and added a contemporary approach: a new Balenciaga generation was launched. Then, the young New Yorker Alexander Wang took over in 2012 and injected a sportswear dynamic to the house. Today, Demna Gvasalia, a German designer known for his work at the head of the Vêtements collective, is the house's artistic director.
